It had been a year and a couple of months since my last big bust, and my lieutenant said that he finally had another case for me, so I was ecstatic. I climbed out of my truck, and my wheat Timberlands hit the pavement with ease. I zipped my leather bomber jacket up before pulling my beanie down over my head as I walked into the office. We had snow overnight, so it was freezing. I walked like a man with a purpose.

“Good morning,” I greeted the moment I stepped into the police station and headed for my lieutenant’s office.

“Come on in, Porter; have a seat,” he said, his voice thunderous. “Want some coffee?” he asked, louder than he needed to be.

“No, thank you,” I said, removing my beanie and unzipping my coat.

“If I haven’t already said it, congrats on your last bust,” he said, repeating the same line as always.

“Thank you, sir,” I said, being respectful.

“It’s time we get you back to work, Detective, and I have a case for you. Are you ready?” he asked, and something about the way he asked wasn’t right.

“I am,” I said.

“Where is that file?” he asked himself as he searched his messy desk. “I just had it somewhere,” he said out loud. “Ah, right here,” he said, pulling out a manila folder from amongst the junk. “Here you are, Detective,” he said, handing it to me.

I was happy, anxious, excited, and relieved to finally really be working again. I opened the folder, and my eyebrows furrowed. “Is this a joke?” I asked, looking up from the folder.

My lieutenant began to laugh uncontrollably, but I didn’t find a damn thing funny. “I am laughing, but trust me, this is not a joke,” he said, still kind of laughing. “I expect you to read over the case thoroughly, become acquainted with it, and make an arrest happen,” he said seriously. I didn’t say a word; I just stared at him as if he had lost his damn mind. “Is there a problem, Porter?” he asked with authority.

“No, sir,” I said, standing with the folder in my hand. “It will get done,” I said as I walked out of his office.

“That’s what I like to hear,” I heard him say before I was completely out of the office. Sometimes my job was easy, but most times, it was a little difficult, and I knew the moment he handed me the folder that this case was going to be difficult.
