It had been a year and a couple of months since my last big bust, and my lieutenant said that he finally had another case for me, so I was ecstatic. I climbed out of my truck, and my wheat Timberlands hit the pavement with ease. I zipped my leather bomber jacket up before pulling my beanie down over my head as I walked into the office. We had snow overnight, so it was freezing. I walked like a man with a purpose.
âGood morning,â I greeted the moment I stepped into the police station and headed for my lieutenantâs office.
âCome on in, Porter; have a seat,â he said, his voice thunderous. âWant some coffee?â he asked, louder than he needed to be.
âNo, thank you,â I said, removing my beanie and unzipping my coat.
âIf I havenât already said it, congrats on your last bust,â he said, repeating the same line as always.
âThank you, sir,â I said, being respectful.
âItâs time we get you back to work, Detective, and I have a case for you. Are you ready?â he asked, and something about the way he asked wasnât right.
âI am,â I said.
âWhere is that file?â he asked himself as he searched his messy desk. âI just had it somewhere,â he said out loud. âAh, right here,â he said, pulling out a manila folder from amongst the junk. âHere you are, Detective,â he said, handing it to me.
I was happy, anxious, excited, and relieved to finally really be working again. I opened the folder, and my eyebrows furrowed. âIs this a joke?â I asked, looking up from the folder.
My lieutenant began to laugh uncontrollably, but I didnât find a damn thing funny. âI am laughing, but trust me, this is not a joke,â he said, still kind of laughing. âI expect you to read over the case thoroughly, become acquainted with it, and make an arrest happen,â he said seriously. I didnât say a word; I just stared at him as if he had lost his damn mind. âIs there a problem, Porter?â he asked with authority.
âNo, sir,â I said, standing with the folder in my hand. âIt will get done,â I said as I walked out of his office.
âThatâs what I like to hear,â I heard him say before I was completely out of the office. Sometimes my job was easy, but most times, it was a little difficult, and I knew the moment he handed me the folder that this case was going to be difficult.
